“Maturity is when you realize that no one is coming to save you but you”

This is the first thing that comes up in your mind when you first see this movie. Very few movies like this have an impactful message that will linger in your mind for a long time. Wake-up Sid is Ranbir Kapoor’s second just after the disaster “Sawaariya”. This movie is one of those movies that subtly hits your subconscious mind and is very representative of the fact that we have many Sids in society that need awakening.

Wake-Up Sid revolves around the life of Siddharth Mehra(Ranbir Kapoor) son of a wealthy entrepreneur played by Anupam Kher. Who owns a shower manufacturing company in Mumbai. Born with a silver spoon Sid’s been offered whatever he demanded on a silver platter without any resistance. Sid is a textbook example of a spoiled brat. Mediocre in academics but extravagant while spending and a party animal too is the central character of this movie. His life takes a different turn when he faces a setback and is forced to reevaluate his choices and decide a path and direction for himself. The plot has several layers which when peeled offer viewers an opportunity to learn about them and connect with them. Each character has been written comprehensively and is depicted gracefully on-screen. Each main character has his mindset and behaves according to their conditioning and is an accurate representation of the same. We get to see a father who is worried about his son’s future and is full of regrets questioning his parenting. We get to see a mother who is struggling to connect with his son and is trying hard to bridge the gap created by the age to get to know her son. Then enters Ayesha(Konkona Sen Sharma) Sid’s would-be love interest later on. Ayesha is the complete opposite of Sid. She is an aspiring writer who has come to Mumbai to achieve her dreams of being a successful and renowned writer. Ayesha is mature, hardworking, and has a knack for being independent. Sid befriends her and helps her settle down in the city. And becomes her first friend in the city.

Things change when Ayesha shows Sid a mirror and expresses her views about him when asked about it. This hits him hard and shakes his foundation and he starts questioning his own identity if he is a nobody and not his rich dad’s son. Later a huge argument ensues between Sid and his parents post which he leaves his home and moves in with Ayesha in her flat. After spending a certain time with Sid Ayesha gets annoyed with Sid’s boyish tendencies and decides to help him. This turns out to be a turning point in Sid’s life which becomes his path and purpose.

The technical aspects of the movie are fine. The City of Mumbai stands out in terms of locations and the way makers have shown them in the movie. Visuals of the monsoon shown at the end of the movie are praise-worthy.

Wake-Up Sid is the type of movie that represents a huge young population. Not speaking of the rich-to-poor dynamic but an overall lack of sense of purpose. Sid represents those children who are privileged but are completely ignorant of the world outside of the walls of the palace they live in. A scene in the movie where a student from a middle-class background loses their seat to Sid despite being eligible because they fell some rupees short of total fees. This scene will tap into your subconscious and will make you re-think about the privileges which we have but others do not. This movie teaches us to be grateful for what we have. The performance of each character in the movie is laudable and will garner you instant respect and admiration. Wake-up Sid sheds light on topics like the responsibility of an individual, the nature of parents, dedication, and discipline towards your goal. In which it showcases all of these creatively. Wake-Up Sid also reflects on the relationship between parents and children. This movie explains to us how parents care deeply about their children. They are affectionate and have a dedication to the betterment of their children. Even if it means breaking their heart at times.

Everyone should watch Wake Up Sid irrespective of their age and experience the brilliance of the characters played on-screen. This movie does the work of waking up sleeping Sids who are in their slumber. Wake-Up Sid will motivate them to set out and achieve goals through diligence, discipline, dedication, and honesty.
